Given the climate of today’s job market, the “it’s not what you know, but who you know” expression is more significant than ever. This is especially true since some estimates state that 70% of jobs are not advertised. Professional networking is a crucial aspect of career growth, especially for college graduates stepping into the job market. This may seem like a daunting task, but it’s a skill that can be developed with practice.
Ohio University’s Executive Director for Career Readiness, Aaron Sturgill says that the best way to get started is to look at every situation to network. “With no boundaries, make a list of people you know and what they do, then reach out to them,” says Sturgill. “These could be former professors, fellow students, even family members.” In fact, practicing introducing yourself and discussing your career interests with those you know will help build confidence.
Networking is not limited to personal interactions; it extends to online platforms like LinkedIn, which can significantly enhance a graduate’s professional profile and visibility. Some things to keep in mind when using LinkedIn to network include:
- Ensure your LinkedIn profile is up to date
- Create a compelling “elevator pitch” message
- Find common ground, (school, hobby, or group) that can help you distinguish yourself from others
- Be proactive when reaching out
- Join alumni associations
Whether it is online or in person, Sturgill offers a key piece of advice, “that connection is not an interview but treat it as one.”
Remember, networking is about building genuine relationships and is a two-way street, so focus on how you can help others as much as how they can help you.
Every interaction is an opportunity to network, so embrace it with enthusiasm and openness. You never know when that chance encounter will be the one that lands you a job.
